Toolsmith without the tools

I found this in several of my musician friends

  • Singers without good dynamic or condensor mic
  • Drummers without drumkit
  • Music producers without knowledge of music
  • Music listeners without a good headphone

Strangely none of these people seem to have a problem with that !

When I got into music production, I learned a very interesting lesson, real fast. My musician friends, the more they had the talent which they got without much effort, the less they wanted to spend money or time or effort, improving it and vice versa

Let’s take some examples to understand this,

  1. If person X was born with a angelic voice, and if he had the passion, there is very less chance that he/ she would keep working on it day and night to improve it
  2. If person Y was born with little bit talent, and if he had the passion, he / she will put a moderate bit of effort to work on his/ her skills and improve it
  3. If person Z had no talent whatsoever, but has the passion for music, then he/ she would die hard to get to where he or she wants to

So that means, if I wanted to do an original and if I wanted one of my friends to sing, most probably he/ she wouldn’t have a good mic at him home which I can borrow ( most probably they won’t even have a good pair of headphones ! ) If I wanted to do a drum part, my drummer friend wouldn’t even have a drum stick with him ! and so on and so forth

So when I got to produce music for myself, first thing I need to do is to make sure, I choose one of the following

  • Get all the instruments, mic, speakers, headphones and ask them to use it, for the recording

OR

  • Get all the instruments and play all the parts by myself

Right now, I am using a combination of both, to get my work done. But this was a very good learning indeed.
